Edgar Degas, also known as Hilaire-Germain-Edgar de Gas, was born on July 19, 1834, in Paris, France. His father was a wealthy banker, and his mother came from a noble family. Degas received a classical education, studying law and philosophy at the University of Paris.

However, Degas had a passion for art. He began taking drawing lessons at an early age, and eventually decided to abandon his legal studies to pursue a career as an artist. In 1855, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under the renowned academic painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.
