In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Ottoman Empire was a major power in the world, and its capital, Istanbul, was a vibrant and cosmopolitan city. English travelers were drawn to the Ottoman Empire for a variety of reasons, including trade, diplomacy, and religious pilgrimage.
