The Story of Elizabeth and Robert Browning

Barrett Browning was also a strong advocate for women's rights and social justice.

Robert Browning was born in 1812 to a less affluent family. He began writing poetry as a teenager and published his first collection, "Pauline," in 1833. Browning's poetry was not as well-received as Barrett Browning's, but he was determined to continue writing. In 1845, he met Elizabeth Barrett Browning at a literary salon and they fell in love. Despite the opposition of Barrett Browning's father, they married in 1846 and lived happily together until Elizabeth's death in 1861.

The Barretts of Wimpole Street on Stage and Screen

The Barretts of Wimpole Street has been adapted into numerous films and stage productions. The first film adaptation was released in 1934 and starred Norma Shearer and Fredric March. The film was a critical and commercial success and won an Academy Award for Best Picture. Other notable film adaptations include the 1957 version starring Jennifer Jones and John Gielgud, and the 1995 version starring Winona Ryder and Hugh Grant.

The Barretts of Wimpole Street has also been adapted into several stage productions. The first stage production was produced in London in 1930. The play has also been produced on Broadway several times, most notably in 1949 with Katharine Cornell and Brian Aherne, and in 1970 with Ingrid Bergman and Laurence Olivier.
