The Stanhopes are a wealthy white family who live in a large house on the hill overlooking the town of Winthrop. The Peabodys are a poor black family who live in a small house on the other side of town. In 1921, a white mob burned down the Peabodys' house and killed their son, Emmett. The Stanhopes were never held accountable for their crime.
A century later, the Stanhopes and the Peabodys are still living in Winthrop. The Stanhopes are still wealthy and powerful, while the Peabodys are still poor and marginalized. The old wounds of the past are still fresh, and the tension between the two families is palpable.
When Avery Stanhope, the great-grandson of the man who led the mob that killed Emmett Peabody, is found dead in his bed, the town is thrown into chaos. The police immediately suspect the Peabodys, but they have no evidence to prove their guilt.
As the investigation into Avery's death continues, the town is forced to confront its racist past. The Stanhopes and the Peabodys are forced to confront their own prejudices and their own roles in the town's history of racial injustice.
Your House Will Pay is a powerful and moving novel that explores the complex themes of revenge, redemption, and racial injustice. The story is told from the perspectives of multiple characters, which gives the reader a deep understanding of the different ways that people experience racism and injustice.
The novel is also a well-written and engaging read. The characters are well-developed and the plot is suspenseful. I highly recommend Your House Will Pay to anyone interested in these important issues.
