Benjamin Banneker: A Great African American

Banneker's interest in science began at a young age. He taught himself mathematics and astronomy by reading books and observing the stars. In 1753, he built a wooden clock that was so accurate that it kept time for over 50 years. Banneker also invented a plow that was designed to improve the efficiency of farming.

In 1791, Banneker published his first almanac, which contained astronomical data and weather predictions. The almanac was a huge success and helped to establish Banneker's reputation as a scientist.
